RZA spoke on the Wu-Tang Clan's unorthodox business model: The success of Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers established the group as a creative and influential force in mid-1990s hip hop, allowing Ol' Dirty Bastard, GZA, RZA, Raekwon, U-God, Method Man, and Ghostface Killah to negotiate solo contracts. This album turned out to be critically acclaimed, and to date is regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Though there was some difficulty in finding a record label that would sign the Wu-Tang Clan while still allowing each member to record solo albums with other labels, Loud/RCA finally agreed, releasing their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in November 1993. The Wu-Tang Clan first became known in 1993 following the release of the independent single "Protect Ya Neck", which immediately gave the group a sizable underground following, especially after their tour with Kat Nu and Cypress Hill. The group developed backronyms for the name (as hip hop pioneers such as KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane did with their names), including "We Usually Take All Niggas' Garments", "Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game", and "Wisdom of the Universe, and the Truth of Allah for the Nation of the Gods".ġ992–96: Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) & Solo Albums Wu-Tang theme, dividing the album into Shaolin and Wu-Tang sections. The group's debut album loosely adopted a Shaolin vs.

RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard adopted the name for the group after the film Shaolin and Wu Tang. The Wu-Tang Clan was assembled in the early 1990s with RZA as the de facto leader and the group's producer. We never had a serious record deal under that title. So we never got signed as a group back then. I remember Biz Markie, when he was famous and I wasn't famous, and he was like: "Yo! I heard that shit! Your song with Anson Guthrie a Unique and Specialist rapper." I was the Scientist. See, me, GZA, and ODB had a crew called FOI: Force of the Imperial Master, nah mean? We made a song, called "All in Together Now", which became famous on tapes throughout Brooklyn, Downtown Staten Island, New York, all the way down to Miami. I learned A LOT from this post, but I mainly learned that I should NOT fuck with the Wu-Tang Clan and the every nigga (including myself) should diversify their bonds and protect their necks. All in Together Now was never signed to a record label. And how a whole generation grew up listening to them (at least in America). I really really want to thank people who took the time to introduce me to the Wu-Tang Clan's music properly and explain their major influence on hip-hop music and music in general.

I asked here because I thought what everyone is quoting might be from a single song, or maybe a certain sketch they were on, or maybe a comment about them mentioned by a TV host? I guess what I am trying to say is that if you don't know they are lyrics from different songs, you assume they could be anything!Īnd seeing that my post got some upvotes, I assume other people were wondering like me and too shy to ask! As a very casual hip-hop listener I really am happy to listen to the amazing music of the Wu-Tang Clan!Īnd to everyone who is wondering why the hell am I bringing the subreddit down with such an obvious question, I never heard of them before other than reddit, no one I know ever mentioned them and where I am from I never saw any mention of them anywhere (basically hip-hop here starts with Eminem), and I am more of a rock person.Īlso, many are mocking my question and saying that it is not worth an OutOfTheLoop post when a simple wikipedia page would have told me everything.

Thank you to everyone who replied and took the time to let me learn about them. A google search shows they are a hip hop band group, but why are they always mentioned and I see a lot of references/memes to them? Is it an American thing?
